Green-crowned Brilliant, atypical immature male

Can someone help me with this one? Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Costa Rica, 1500 m. I believe it is some flavor of Green-crowned Brilliant (esp as it seems to have the violet throat dot; and the structure looks right), but the rufous feathers are in completely the wrong place for an immature male, at least as described in Garrigues & Dean -- ear coverts & breast collar/belly ground color, rather than chin & malar stripe like a well-behaved definitive immature male. Maybe the adult green contour feathers are just emerging in an atypical order?
