Greater Crested Tern (adult, resident species)
More photos from our annual visit to Bird Island | Seychelles - a privately owned, remote, coral sand cay island situated in the Indian Ocean just south of the equator, some 1200km off the East African coast - the northernmost island of the Seychelles archipelago.
Greater Crested Tern (Thalasseus bergii)
A large tern with a yellow bill, angular head and short black shaggy crest. There are six recognized races of this bird worldwide - the Thalassinus race breeds in Tanzania, Chagos (south of the Maldives), Rodrigues (outer island of Mauritius) and some of the Seychelles outer islands. On Bird Island they hang around in small groups on a couple of particular areas of the beach and are quite approachable.
