The Church at Carvel
Years ago I purchased an 8 1/2 X 11 print of the westbound CN Super Continental at Carvel Alberta taken by Dave Shaw. Shot from the Highway 770 overpass in high sun, it featured the hamlet's Ukrainian Catholic church in the background. The trees have grown considerably since Dave shot the passenger train, so it took the development of drone technology to enable a photographer to frame the structure in a modern day shot.
I pulled into Carvel on the evening of April 30 planning to do a tele smash shot of a westbound grain train tiipping over the grade at the far east end of town. My initial plan was scrubbed due to the sun being too low in the horizon for the shot. Plan B was to lanuch the drone, and try and shoot some video, which is something I haven't done a lot of. As soon as the bird cleared the tree level I noticed the light, and quickly changed gears to what became Plan C.
DJI drones don't do higher ISO's very well, but even with the grain in the shot I'm happy with this attempt, and I'll be returning to the spot during the fall when the leaves change to yellow.
