39l Sandpiper - Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda)

Large, tall sandpiper with a thin neck and small dove-like head. Large eye. Thin, straight bill. Long legs, long tail and long wings.


Heavily marbled black and brown on the back and wings. Dark cap, white eye rings. Yellow bill with black tip. White chin, neck and throat. The neck is streaked with dark brown which continues down to the breast and on to the flanks. White belly and undertail coverts. Yellow legs.


Breeds from central Maine west through Canada to Alaska; southeast to northern Oklahoma, and east to New England. Spends winters in South America from southern Brazil to south-central Argentina.
