The Duke of Portland Boathouse, Ullswater
The Duke of Portland Boathouse is "One of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District" so why has it taken me so long to find and snap it for myself? I don't know! But, on this trip to the Lakes, it was well up on my list!
Having said which............there are some places you see in other folks' photographs, that you have to see for yourself.......and are, ultimately, disappointing. Top of this list, for me, is Ribble Head Viaduct.
The boathouse is usually portrayed with near-perfect reflections / shrouded in mist / lit by the Moon etc. (admittedly, on this occasion, it was a Friday lunchtime, with a stiff breeze and threatening rain). It is. in fact, shoe-horned in between the lake and the main A592 road and the shoreline to both sides of it are desperately in need of attention from the local council litter pickers.
But forget all that, and just look at the picture. Will I go back and have another go under more favourable conditions? Of course I will!
