A so-called Barbary lion, Panthera leo leo, from Cat Tales. The Barbary lion is extinct in the wild, though some captive lions are thought to be Barbary lions. The mane is not a sure way of judging Barbary decent though, so this guy's probably another subspecies, unless they can back their claim. Most, if not all, modern "Barbary lions" are.


The lion was apparently raised with a dog, but the dog just passed away of old age about a month or so before this shot was taken. This is at Cat Tales Zoological Park in Mead, Washington. They specialize in rescue of big cats, bears, and other animals in need of homes. Their website is here:
