Books are Companions and Friends

Notes: Campaign for a public library service, Blackheath Rhododendron Festival parade. This was five years before the first public library branch opened and part of a campaign that had started in the early 1960s.

 

The boy is Richard Murphy, photo by his mother Thelma Murphy. Thelma served as an alderman and library advocate on Blue Mountains City Council from 1965-1975 and 1977-1979. She saw the Public Library Act adopted in 1967 and the first chief Librarian appointed in 1974.
