Jelly Leftwich and Blue Devil, 1930

George “Jelly” Leftwich, Jr., Duke’s first director of Instrumental Music composed the fight song “The Blue and White” and led Duke’s musical programs from 1926 to 1933. It is likely that Leftwich created the idea of having a mascot in costume shortly after the new football stadium opened in 1929.
