Juneteenth Rally for Justice

Minneapolis, Minnesota

June 19, 2020

Crowds of people celebrated Juneteenth in north Minneapolis. The themes were community, love, unity, resilience, and the ongoing fight for justice, freedom, and equality. There was also free food, toys, masks, and live music.

Around 4:30pm, hundreds of participants joined a Juneteenth March for Justice and marched down Broadway.

"Juneteenth (a portmanteau of June and nineteenth; also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day) is a holiday celebrating the liberation of those who had been held as slaves in the United States. Originating in Texas, it is now celebrated annually on the 19th of June throughout the United States, with varying official recognition. Specifically, it commemorates Union army general Gordon Granger announcing federal orders in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, proclaiming that all people held as slaves in Texas were free." -Wikipedia

On May 25, Minneapolis Police officers arrested George Floyd, handcuffed him, then held him down on his stomach while Derek Chauvin put a knee on his neck as Floyd pleaded for breath. George Floyd died soon after. The four officers at the scene have been fired. Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter.
