old brickworks chimney

The old Goodlet and Smith brickworks, Merrylands, NSW operating for over one hundred years, now converted to a passive recreation area named Holroyd Gardens.

The original chimney was 46 metres high and construction was started about 1878 by a local bricklayer named Isaac Paton who reputedly drank a bottle of brandy each day before climbing to the top to continue working.

The chimney was reduced to 24 metres in 2002 for safety reasons
