Coca-Cola sign, Richmond, 1986

When I first visited Richmond in 1985 with an eye to moving there, I was stunned by all the great old signs downtown. The street had somehow survived modernization yet was still vibrant. I moved there the next year and bought a 100-year-old building just off the main drag, Broad Street. During my seven years there, the downtown's two giant department stores both closed and the surrounding area declined pretty rapidly.

Among Broad Street's many wonderful old signs, this was the jewel, and I was transfixed by it during that initial reconaissance trip. Four or five years later it was refurbished, but rather shoddily. Anyone have a current photo?

Incidentally, the barbershop below was a busy, busy place with at least a dozen barbers. Curiously, there were several other barbershops within a few blocks, all large and very popular.
