Palacio de Congresos

Palacio de Congresos de Oviedo

Designed by Santiago Calatrava

Not so long ago, it was deemed that every important Spanish city and place worthy of a visit should have two essential structures in its skyline: a building designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava and a Corte Inglés. Those that didn’t have these two key ingredients were ostracised from the rest and considered less esteemed. And so, Oviedo, the Asturian capital, was counted as one of the great capitals as soon as this monstrosity of a building was erected in the form of the Palacio de Congresos.

Calatrava's Oviedo complex - which includes a shopping mall, a four-star hotel, the regional culture and health departments and an underground parking lot - is the most expensive private project ever undertaken in Asturias (79 million euros). It was controversial from the beginning because of its location, sandwiched between buildings and only visible from the higher parts of town. It is also too large for the space it is in, and its lateral U-shaped arms practically touch the nearby residential buildings.

Palacio de Congresos is in the Top 10 of ugliest buildings in Spain :-)

Especially for Viejito who is waiting for my next Calatrava pic.. ;-)
