East and West Spanish Peaks

I drove to Colorado on Friday with the intent of climbing West Spanish Peak, 13,626'. This is a picture I took from my car as I drove in towards the trailhead. Unfortunately, the access road to Cordova Pass was blocked by numerous downed trees owing to the intense winds and even tornados that passed through Colorado on Thursday. I even saw one cabin in Cuchara with its roof missing.

The hike from where the road was blocked would have been a 20 mile slog so I opted instead to drive over to the southern San Juans and make a bid for Bennet Peak. Arriving just before midnight, I found the 4WD road to the trailhead blocked by large snow drifts. Frustrated, I camped in my truck at the lowest snowbank, took a short walk in the morning, then did a 300-point-turn and drove home. No climbing for me this weekend.
