Forest Turnover

Old-growth forest, Columbia County, within the Jakey Hollow Natural Area of Weiser State Forest.

The photo shows young trees (mostly American beeches) growing amid much larger, older trees (mostly hemlocks and white pines). Old-growth forests are characterized by a mix of tree ages and sizes. When a large tree falls, the break in the canopy allows light to reach the formerly shaded forest floor. Tree seedlings, responding to the light, will readily grow.
