Cant Ranch Historic District at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument
The Cant Ranch Historic District is located in the Sheep Rock Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The Cant Ranch Historic District, as designated in the 1984 National Register nomination, is a 200-acre vernacular landscape that documents early 20th century ranching operations in the John Day River Valley. James Cant, a Scottish immigrant, purchased the land in 1910 and became one of the more prominent ranchers in the valley. The ranch remained with the Cant family until it was purchased by the NPS in 1975.
