Black-legged Seriema - Chunga burmeisteri
The Black-legged Seirema is found only in the Chaco region of Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay in central southern South America. It was on my "must see" list for the trip, together with the closely related Red-legged Seriema (Cariama Cristata). The two species are the only members of the Cariamidae family, an enigmatic group whose relationship to other birds is still being sorted out. A kind of a cross between a crane, a bustard and a hawk is how they seem to me.
This one was photographed right alongside the road just outside of Boyuibe, Bolivia.
