Walthamstow Building Society Advertisement 1988

A newspaper advertisement for the now defunct Walthamstow Building Society promoting a savings account at 'normal' interest rates...

 

The Society was taken over by the Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society in 1990, which itself was taken over by what was then Lloyds TSB bank in 1997.

 

What remained of Cheltenham & Gloucester (by this time just one of the brand names of what had become Lloyds Banking Group) was hived off together with other selected parts of the Group into a new 'TSB Bank' in 2013.

 

In 2015 Spain's fifth largest bank, Sabadell, acquired TSB Bank.

 

I can't help thinking that Walthamstow Building Society members in 1988 would have been somewhat incredulous had they been told that 28 years later it would a constituent part of a Spanish bank.
