The Trinity

Cropped and blown up from a separate photo - I couldn't get close enough to take a proper snap of the picture, which was hanging up on the outside of a kebab shop.

There are *loads* more Hizbollah flags and pictures of Nasrallah around Damascus than last time I went. It's pretty obvious that the locals see last year's Israel-Lebanon conflict as a clear victory for the Arab world. I don't want to get drawn into commenting on the merits or demerits of Hizbollah, nor the causes, conduct and outcome of last summer's mini-war. But I will say this: to a person, every obvious supporter of Hizbollah that we interected with was just as polite and friendly to us as anyone else we encountered. Whatever their views on Israel, or Western foreign policy, no Syrian is going to hold you responsible for the actions of your government. 'People good, governments bad' was a sentiment we heard quite a few times on our journey.

It was also interesting to see that support for Hizbollah seems to be quite ecumenical - overt indications of support seemed to be evenly distributed between Old Damascus' Christian, Shia and Sunni quarters.
