and at the COP25 Climate Change Conference in Madrid there are only discussions about money and imaginary aims for 2050 instead of effective measures that must be taken immediately, my hope for this planet is fading as fast as these fascinating trees.

Since 2005, eight of the 13 oldest trees and five of the six largest have either suffered catastrophic partial collapses or completely fallen down and died!

Fortunately I had the chance to visit a few of them 'just in time' like the Chapman's Baobab, a landmark for the early explorers of the region of Ntwetwe Pan, Botswana, Africa.

More information about the sad end of this fantastic giant (it collapsed in 2016) HERE and HERE!

For MBT and as an "alarm signal" for us all!

about the outcome of COP25 in Madrid ...

shame on the leaders of the US, Saudi-Arabia, Brazil and Australia for your short-term thinking and narrowminded monetary motivations!

Maybe the day will come, that even you will notice:

"When the last forest is burned,

the last glacier has melted,

the last crop is ruined by the drought,

the last rhino, elephant and tiger is poached,

and the last island is flooded,

you will realize that you cannot eat money!"

But then it probably might be too late ... :-(

A successful week to all the others, who at least will try to stop climate change and to save this lovely planet NOW!

A pass over the UK but unfortunately Scotland was in the clouds, and our orbit doesn’t pass so much to the North. The United Nations Convention on Climate Change #COP26 has started in Glasgow, Scotland. On my first mission COP25 happened just after I returned to Earth, and the results were a little disappointing. Let's hope that the leaders from all over the world can unite and work together to achieve the goals that will keep our planet habitable for many millennia to come. We need #ClimateAction to reduce emissions and protect our world!

Chilean capital Santiago – among the largest conurbations in South America – viewed in false colour from ESA’s Proba-V minisatellite, with vegetation in red.

This December, Santiago will help set humankind’s future hosting the latest United Nations Climate Change Conference, the 25th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 25).

Sitting in a valley between the Chilean Coastal Range and the Andes Mountains, Santiago experienced explosive growth over the course of the last century. Today it is the fifth-largest city in South America, with a population of more than five million, and seven million people living within its overall metropolitan area.

In such a densely populated area, open space becomes all the more valuable. Note the hilly Santiago Metropolitan Park, seen as a dark mark running northeast of the centre. The double red patch just below and left of the city centre is the rectangular O'Higgins Park, right, with the Club Hípico de Santiago racecourse to its left.

Santiago Airport, the largest in Chile, is visible to the northwest of the city centre.

Launched on 7 May 2013, Proba-V is a miniaturised ESA satellite tasked with a full-scale mission: to map land cover and vegetation growth across the entire planet every two days.

Its main camera’s continent-spanning 2250 km swath width collects light in the blue, red, near-infrared and mid-infrared wavebands at a 300 m pixel size, down to 100 m in its central field of view.

VITO Remote Sensing in Belgium processes and then distributes Proba-V data to users worldwide. An online image gallery highlights some of the mission’s most striking images so far, including views of storms, fires and deforestation.

This 100 m spatial resolution image was acquired on 5 April 2017.

This year the FFF+ have decided to change their monthly challenge from "Five On The Fifth" (FOTF) to “Freestyle on the Fifth”, so still a theme every month, and to be posted on the 5th of the month, but this year it does not have to be five images, it is up to the member to choose a single photo or a collage/composite of how ever many photos they like. The theme will still be set a member of the group each month.

This month it was Laszlo’s turn to choose the theme, and he chose “Summertime”.

I chose to represent Summertime as it is being experienced by so much of our country which is a state of severe drought.

These photos were taken on the last day of 2019 in the middle of the Providence Road dam at Woodlands Historic Park. If you’ve followed my Flickr stream for a while you would have seen my photos of Ducks, Grebes, Herons, Reed Warblers, Brown Honeyeaters and even a Spotted Crake all frolicking in the dam. Now there is not a drop of water in sight, just dried mud and dead reeds.

The drought is so bad in some parts of Australia that some towns are in danger of running out of water completely. There has been talk of entire towns being evacuated due to lack of water. Obviously farmers across the country are in the struggle of their life. And of course, the dryness is causing an ever increasing fire risk across huge swathes of the country with huge areas currently suffering fires that look like the start of the apocalypse.

Despite this, our government continues it’s climate denying stance, recently finishing last amongst all countries of the world in a ranking of the effectiveness of climate policy and being one of a cadre of four that really stymied the recent COP25 climate conference.

In addition they continue to approve new fossil fuel mines such as Adani while we should be doing everything to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, not increasing them. Adani is also going to have a further devastating effect on the lack of water situation. It is estimated that the Adani mine will consume at least 270 billion litres of groundwater, and the government have already approved a plan allowing Adani to drain 12.5 billion litres from the Suttor River without even conducting a full environmental assessment.

I am further bewildered at a recent decision where a Chinese-owned company has been granted approval to run a 96 million litre a year commercial water mining operation in severely drought-hit southern Queensland, where locals are on water rations and communities are at imminent risk of running dry.

It really just doesn’t make sense. They are raping and pillaging our country, and selling it to the highest bidder and showing blatant disregard for the country, the planet and the people they are meant to be representing. Scott Morrison and his LNP crones are in the pockets of the fossil-fuel industry. They love coal and the money it brings them more than they love their country and its people.

Our Government continues to ignore warnings from scientists, experts and their own Home Affairs department - acknowledging a problem would mean acknowledging climate change is real.

They lie and cheat and rely on their corporate media mates to obfuscate what is really happening - it is a disgrace.

“STOP THE FAIRY TALES. KNOW THE TRUTH !

James Eagle Standingcloud is with Allen Will.

SOOOOO, DO YOU WANT TRUTH OR DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO BELIEVE IN FAIRY TALES?

HERE IS THE TRUE STORY OF THE FIRST THANKSGIVING! The Pequot War was one of the bloodiest Indian wars ever fought. In 1637 near present day Groton, Connecticut, over 700 men, women and children of the Pequot Tribe had gathered for their annual Green Corn Festival which is our Thanksgiving celebration. In the predawn hours the sleeping Indians were surrounded by English and Dutch mercenaries who ordered them to come outside. Those who came out were shot or clubbed to death while the terrified women and children who huddled inside the longhouse were burned alive.

The next day, John Winthrop (1588-1649), the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony declared "A Day Of Thanksgiving" because 700 unarmed men, women and children had been murdered. Cheered by their "victory", the brave colonists and their Indian allies attacked village after village. Women and children over 14 were sold into slavery while the rest were murdered. Boats loaded with as many as 500 slaves regularly left the ports of New England. Bounties were paid for Indian scalps to encourage as many deaths as possible. Following an especially successful raid against the Pequot in what is now Stamford, Connecticut, the churches announced a second day of "thanksgiving" to celebrate victory over the heathen savages.

During the feasting, the hacked off heads of Natives were kicked through the streets like soccer balls. Even the friendly Wampanoag did not escape the madness. Their chief was beheaded, and his head impaled on a pole in Plymouth, Massachusetts -- where it remained on display for 24 years. The killings became more and more frenzied, with days of thanksgiving feasts being held after each successful massacre. George Washington finally suggested that only one day of Thanksgiving per year be set aside instead of celebrating each and every massacre. Later Abraham Lincoln decreed Thanksgiving Day to be a legal national holiday during the Civil War -- on the same day he ordered troops to march against the starving Sioux in Minnesota, Abraham Lincoln approved 38 Dakota hanged on December 26, 1862, in the largest one-day execution in American history. This story doesn't have quite the same fuzzy feelings associated with it as the one where the Indians and Pilgrims are all sitting down together at the big feast. But we need to learn our true history ! ! ! NO MORE LIES ! ! !”

Val Eisman:

“"They’re “concerned” but not concerned enough to do much about it

It is only proper to acknowledge when progress, however meager, is made, although the bar set by recent conferences is woefully low. Congratulations don’t seem to be in order here. The one tangible accomplishment is that many of the governments representing the world’s biggest contributors to global warming did agree to strengthen their goals to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. The bad news is that the new commitments remain well short of meeting stated goals. The worse news is that the commitments still have no enforcement mechanisms. Peer pressure appears to remain the preferred methodology, which thus far has not imbued the world’s environmentalists with confidence. For sound reasons.

For example, an effort to have the COP26 negotiators agree to a “phase out” of coal was watered down to a “phase down,” a vague formulation with no specific meaning, and financial transfers from industrialized countries to underdeveloped countries most at risk (which are often the least culpable) have been below what has been promised and well less than what would be sufficient to mitigate damages. Mary Robinson, the former United Nations commissioner for human rights, wrote, “This represents a failure of leadership and a failure of diplomacy. World leaders must be held accountable for the climate disaster playing out on their watch. It is time to call out those who have obstructed the negotiations in Glasgow, and those who continue to downplay the climate emergency.”

That would be difficult to argue against, although moral arguments have had limited effect thus far. Unfortunately, the final text from COP26 is full of the “concerns” and “notes” that past conferences have featured. For example, the final text states that it “Expresses alarm and utmost concern that human activities have caused around 1.1 °C of warming to date, that impacts are already being felt in every region, and that carbon budgets consistent with achieving the Paris Agreement temperature goal are now small and being rapidly depleted.” Furthermore, the text “Urges Parties that have not yet communicated new or updated nationally determined contributions to do so as soon as possible” and “Acknowledges the importance of coherent action to respond to the scale of needs caused by the adverse impacts of climate change.”

That will show the atmosphere!

The context here is that the world’s governments agreed at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 to hold the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-Industrial Age average, a change from the previous commitment of 2 degrees, although no corresponding pledges were made to reach either goal. Following COP25 two years ago (COP26 was postponed a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic), the pledges then in existence by the world’s governments, were they honored in full, would have allowed global warming to reach 3 degrees, a catastrophic result. This was the conference in which the world’s governments were to have committed themselves to reach the Paris Climate Summit goal.

Temperature goal remains on paper, not in real world

What was actually achieved with the latest round of promises? Climate Action Tracker reports that 123 countries and the European Union submitted new NDC (nationally determined contributions) targets, although a dozen did not strengthen their commitments, a list that includes Australia, Brazil and Russia, each among the world’s biggest contributors of greenhouse gases. An analysis by the Tracker, a collaboration between Climate Analytics and NewClimate Institute, has found that were there to be full implementation of submitted and binding long-term targets and 2030 targets, the world’s temperature would increase by 1.7 to 2.6 degrees Celsius from the pre-Industrial Age average. That is well above the 1.5-degree goal.

Full implementation of just the goals set for 2030 would be enough for the world’s temperature to rise by 1.9 to 3 degrees. Worse, what the Tracker calls “real world action based on current polices” would result in a temperature increase of 2 to 3.7 degrees. The report concludes, “It is clear there is a massive credibility, action and commitment gap that casts a long and dark shadow of doubt over the net zero goals put forward by more than 140 countries, covering 90% of global emissions.” Furthermore:"”

It’s likely not every Republican, or for that matter Democratic, voter fully appreciates the national security nuances of geo-politics much less why withholding aid from Ukraine in exchange for a personal favor is a gravely awful thing to do.

But I’d bet every American, from all walks of life, understands the presence and absence of cash. Which is why Democrats’ impeachment efforts erred in not detailing – on television - every instance where Trump and his family personally benefited financially from his being elected to the office of President. This information would have infuriated many struggling Americans no matter how they vote. But Democrats didn’t because: a) they are out of touch, and b) they couldn’t survive if they put the issue of making money off elected office under the microscope. Our two-party system is deeply flawed. And in the 2020 elections this system is going to produce flawed results.

“Johnson was matched with an ideal opponent in Jeremy Corbyn: a man hated by much of the Party he represented and plagued by baseless allegations of Anti-Semitism from across the spectrum of the British press for the proceeding three years. The feeble attempts to roll some of these accusations back during the election campaign when it became clear that it was Corbyn or Johnson were themselves were too little, too late, particularly as Tory aligned newspapers were more than happy to double down on the claims.”

This is a copy of Time Person of the Year Greta Thunberg's address to the U.N. Climate Summit COP25. The original post was carried by DemocracyNow.org at www.democracynow.org/2019/12/12/greta_thunberg_speech_cop... under the article titled "Greta Thunberg Slams COP25, Says Response to Climate Crisis Is “Clever Accounting and Creative PR.”

People are already dying, a mass extinction is raging and entire countries are being thrown into crisis. Yet our leaders continue to obfuscate the worsening problem with deceptive measuring practices, out-right falsehoods, and assumptions of future reductions in green house gases being achieved by technology that doesn't even exist and probably never will.

The reality is that our planet's failing ability to sustain life is no longer a problem to be faced solely by future generations but rather all of us alive today.

At the U.N. climate summit in Madrid, 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg addressed world leaders Wednesday, hours after she was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year. Thunberg came to the talks after a trip to meet with climate leaders across North America in anticipation of the scheduled climate conference in Santiago, Chile, before the talks were abruptly moved to the Spanish capital. In her address, Thunberg warned that the planet’s carbon budget is down to just eight years, and urged bold action. “I still believe that the biggest danger is not inaction. The real danger is when politicians and CEOs are making it look like real action is happening when in fact almost nothing is being done apart from clever accounting and creative PR,” Thunberg said.

Transcript

This is a rush transcript. Copy may not be in its final form.

AMY GOODMAN: We’re broadcasting from inside the United Nations Climate Change Conference here in Madrid, Spain, where 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg addressed the plenary on Wednesday. She spoke just a few hours before being named Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

GRETA THUNBERG: A year and a half ago, I didn’t speak to anyone unless I really had to. But then I found a reason to speak. Since then, I have given many speeches and learned that when you talk in public, you should start with something personal or emotional to get everyone’s attention, say things like, “Our house is on fire,” “I want you to panic,” or “How dare you!” But today I will not do that, because then those phrases are all that people focus on. They don’t remember the facts, the very reason why I say those things in the first place. We no longer have time to leave out the science.

For about a year, I have been constantly talking about our rapidly declining carbon budgets, over and over again. But since that is still being ignored, I will just keep repeating it. In chapter two, on page 108 in the SR 1.5 IPCC report that came out last year, it says that if we are to have a 67% chance of limiting the global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, we had, on January 1st, 2018, 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit in that budget. And, of course, that number is much lower today as we emit about 42 gigatons of CO2 every year, including land use. With today’s emissions levels, that remaining budget will be gone within about eight years. These numbers aren’t anyone’s opinions or political views. This is the current best available science. Though many scientists suggest these figures are too moderate, these are the ones that have been accepted through the IPCC.

And please note that these figures are global, and therefore do not say anything about the aspect of equity, which is absolutely essential to make the Paris Agreement work on a global scale. That means that richer countries need to do their fair share and get down to real zero emissions much faster and then help poorer countries do the same, so people in less fortunate parts of the world can raise their living standards.

These numbers also don’t include most feedback loops, nonlinear tipping points or additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution. Most models assume, however, that future generations will somehow be able to suck hundreds of billions of tons of CO2 out of the air with technologies that do not exist in the scale required and maybe never will. The approximate 67% chance budget is the one with the highest odds given by the IPCC. And now we have less than 340 gigatons of CO2 left to emit in that budget to share fairly.

And why is it so important to stay below 1.5 degrees? Because even at 1 degree, people are dying from the climate crisis. Because that is what the united science calls for to avoid destabilizing the climate, so that we have the best possible chance to avoid setting off irreversible chain reactions, such as melting glaciers, polar ice and thawing Arctic permafrost. Every fraction of a degree matters.

So there it is again. This is my message. This is what I want you to focus on. So please tell me: How do you react to these numbers without feeling at least some level of panic? How do you respond to the fact that basically nothing is being done about this, without feeling the slightest bit of anger? And how do you communicate this without sounding alarmist? I would really like to know.

Since the Paris Agreement, global banks have invested 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars in fossil fuels. One hundred companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions. The G20 countries account for almost 80% of total emissions. The richest 10% of the world’s population produce half of our CO2 emissions, while the poorest 50% account for just one-tenth. We indeed have some work to do, but some more than others.

Recently, a handful of rich countries pledged to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases by so-and-so many percent by this or that date, or to become climate-neutral or net zero in so-and-so many years. This may sound impressive at first glance, but even though the intentions may be good, this is not leadership. This is not leading. This is misleading, because most of these pledges do not include aviation, shipping, and imported and exported goods and consumption. They do, however, include the possibility of countries to offset their emissions elsewhere. These pledges don’t include the immediate yearly reduction rates needed for wealthy countries, which is necessary to stay within the remaining tiny budget. Zero in 2050 means nothing if high emission continues even for a few years; then the remaining budget will be gone.

Without seeing the full picture, we will not solve this crisis. Finding holistic solutions is what the COP should be all about. But instead, it seems to have turned into some kind of opportunity for countries to negotiate loopholes and to avoid raising their ambition. Countries are finding clever ways around having to take real action, like double counting emissions reductions and moving their emissions overseas and walking back on their promises to increase ambition or refusing to pay for solutions or loss and damage. This has to stop. What we need is real, drastic emission cuts at the source.

But, of course, just reducing emissions is not enough. Our greenhouse gas emissions has to stop. To stay below 1.5 degrees, we need to keep the carbon in the ground. Only setting up distant dates and saying things which give the impression of that action is underway will most likely do more harm than good, because the changes required are still nowhere in sight. The politics needed does not exist today, despite what you might hear from world leaders.

And I still believe that the biggest danger is not inaction. The real danger is when politicians and CEOs are making it look like real action is happening when in fact almost nothing is being done apart from clever accounting and creative PR.

I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel around the world. And my experience is that the lack of awareness is the same everywhere, not the least amongst those elected to lead us. There is no sense of urgency whatsoever. Our leaders are not behaving as if we were in an emergency. In an emergency, you change your behavior. If there is a child standing in the middle of the road and cars are coming at full speed, you don’t look away because it’s too uncomfortable. You immediately run out and rescue that child. And without that sense of urgency, how can we, the people, understand that we are facing a real crisis? And if the people are not fully aware of what is going on, then they will not put pressure on the people in power to act. And without pressure from the people, our leaders can get away with basically not doing anything — which is where we are now. And around and around it goes.

In just three weeks we will enter a new decade, a decade that will define our future. Right now we are desperate for any sign of hope. Well, I’m telling you there is hope. I have seen it. But it does not come from the governments or corporations. It comes from the people, the people who have been unaware but are now starting to wake up. And once we become aware, we change. People can change. People are ready for change. And that is the hope, because we have democracy. And democracy is happening all the time, not just on Election Day, but every second and every hour. It is public opinion that runs the free world. In fact, every great change throughout history has come from the people. We do not have to wait. We can start the change right now. We, the people. Thank you.

AMY GOODMAN: That’s 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg. Right after her address, scores of youth activists rushed the stage as security tried to escort them off. They stood, immovable, fists raised in the air, chanting, “You can’t drink oil! Keep it in the soil!” Their final chant as they walked off the stage was “We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!”

YOUTH ACTIVISTS: We are unstoppable! Another world is possible! We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!

AMY GOODMAN: Outside the U.N. summit plenary on Thursday afternoon, we’ll hear voices from the protests that took place that afternoon, and speak with Uganda’s first Fridays for Future climate striker. She was there on the stage in the morning, and she was pushed outside as she protested with others in the afternoon. We’ll be speaking with [Fridays for] Future climate striker Vanessa Nakate. Stay with us.

Aporte a cuatro servicios ecosistémicos

We also had a well deserved #RayofTheDay to the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) which was accepted by Enele Sopoaga, a diplomat and former Prime Minister of Tuvalu.
