Jazz saxophonist David Murray plays a tribute to my friend, the late Don "Kwame" Shaw, at St. Mark's Church on The Bowery in the East Village, NYC on Sunday, January 19, 2020.

David Greig was the supermarket (initially grocery shop) chain founded by the Greig family of Hornsey, north London. With its headquarters at Atlantic Road, Brixton (and later at Waterloo Road, London) and grocery shops across southern England, it was a rival to the Sainsbury's chain, John and Mary Sainsbury having opened their first grocery shop in Holborn one year earlier. A deep personal rivalry developed between the two families, because of acrimonious feelings about the Greigs' alleged betrayal of a verbal agreement regarding the purchasing of sites for development. By the late 1960s, there were more than 220 Greig shops across the south of the country, all trading under the David Greig brand. However, the company was sold to Fitch lovell and merged into Fitch Lovell's own Key Markets supermarket brand in 1972 after crippling death duties were incurred when several of the men in the family died in quick succession, with inheritance tax obligatory on their entirely private holdings. Key Markets was later bought by Gateway, and eventually rebranded as Somerfield, although several of the larger stores were taken over by ASDA, including the Sturry Road site, near Canterbury. This was in turn bought by the Co-operative Group. Each of these changes included considerable restructuring, so many ex-Greig stores may now be in different ownership.

While at Pratt Institute, from 1975 to 1977, David Levine was a mentor of mine. He was a wonderful man, great teacher and a brilliant artist. A genius. It was an honor to know him. In 1976 Levine was hired to do reportage of the presidential campaigns of Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. At that time I was working at New York Magazine’s art department running the photostat machine. David asked me if I would make photostats of his drawings. I couldn’t believe I was carrying around his sketchbook. Of course I made a set of copies for myself. Recently I was thinking about the drawings and pulled them out to look after many years. Here are a small sample of them. The man could draw! I almost want to toss my pencils in the garbage……

David does not have a Flickr account. He is an Australian friend with whom we walked in 2016 in Northern Italy. I was happy that he was as crazy as me to take lots of photos ( only with his cell).

"Taking pictures is savouring life intensely..."

Mon ami David n'a pas de page Flickr mais comme moi il aime faire des photos. Nous faisions un "self-guided" aventure à pied dans la région du Piedmonte, dans le nord de l'Italie en septembre 2016.

St Davids is the smallest city in Britain - with apparently a population of only around 1600 people. It is however the home of a rather splendid cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century.

The building behind the cathedral is the ruin of the Bishops Palace, which dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

Another view of the Cathedral and a shot of the Bishops Palace ruins are in the comment below.

A wonderful gift from our friend Steffen. The poems are awesome, every time I read them I find something new. They're great inspiration. Thanks a lot Steffen and David Merritt!

Newest gable painting in Aarhus...the owner of the building, has ordered the decoration, as a gift, to his spouse who is a big David Bowie fan

A Brilliant Artist and Sexy Soul. This one came as a shock today. Though I wasn't a faithful follower, there is a period of his music that I strongly identify with my childhood....

Bronze David Statue at Piazzale Michelangeloin Florence, Italy

Fans of Michelangelo’s statue David have three opportunities to see it. A replica was placed in front of the Palazzo della Signoria when the original was moved to Accademia Gallery in 1873. This bronze cast adorns the center of Piazzale Michelangelo, also known as Michelangelo Square. At the pedestal’s base are figures representing day, night, twilight and dawn. The original marble allegorical statues by Michelangelo adorn tombs in the Medici Chapels at San Lorenzo Basilica.

David Sedaris was in town last night and I got to go see him with my son. This was the third time I've gone to one of his readings. He might not be for everyone but I love his storytelling, there are a few stories that might not be for the faint of heart but you never know what you'll get and I like that. I had hoped to get my books signed afterward but the line was incredibly long so I'll have to wait until he returns in June when his new book comes out.

One of his sisters is Amy Sedaris, you may be familiar with her work as an actress.

If you aren't familiar with his work, here are a few links to some of my favorite stories.

A favorite place to walk.

According to its first owner, who acquired the work from David Gilmore Blythe,Art versus Law "portray(ed) a true incident in the life of the artist."Blythe showed himself arriving, canvases and brushes in hand,at the door to the attic studio on which he owed rent, only to find it padlocked by his landlord and posted"TO LET-ON GOOD SECURITY!."The artist, clearly lacking any "security,"is dressed in tattered clothes and worn boots. On the barrel to his right hand and in the wood box at the left are broken and empty bottles, which suggest the cause of Blythe's distressed situation.

Talk about "a starving artist."

David di Michelangelo

This was the last time that I saw David in person. We chatted a couple of times after on the phone. The last time we spoke was in 2007. I think Levine’s fame happened with his work in “The New York Review of Books.” His first drawing appeared in 1963. He drew more than 3,800 pen-and-ink caricatures of famous writers, artists and politicians for the publication. In 2006 he was diagnosed with macular degeneration, an eye disease that leads to blindness. In the “Review” after April 2007 no new work appeared, they just ran his older work. On our last phone call he told me about the “Review” and said, “They fired me.” I said , “But YOU are DAVID LEVINE!” To which he replied, “I KNOW!”

David died in 2009.

If it wasn’t for Pratt Institute I would never have met this man and had him as a mentor and friend. How lucky was that?

Steel on the skyline

Sky made of glass

Made for a real world

All things must pass

Waiting for something

Looking for someone

Is there no reason?

Have I stared too long?

Ooo, ooo

You say you'll leave me

And when the sun is low

And the rays high

I can see it now

I can feel it die
