Scheich-Zayid-Moschee Abu Dhabi

Both reflection and symmetry are essential elements of the Islamic architecture.

To take pictures here would be a kind of therapy because water as smooth as a mirror has a beneficial effect on peace of mind. I feel as if I can see even my subconsciousness at this location.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Brilliant architecture inside the palace of Moghul emperor, Akbar, in Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, India

Khiva in Uzbekistan was the third and last Silk Road city that we visited, and like Samarkand and Bukhara they are very worthwhile visiting. This was also the city where we for the first time encountered many western tourists.

Strolling around was very enjoyable and the center of this city is one big museum with mosques, mausolea, madrasses and minarets. During the night the buildings are very nicely lit, and i hope to share at least one night shot.

The minaret that you see here is the Islam Khodja Minaret, and it is a rather superficial remark how beautiful this one is with all the colors, patterns and different tile work.

20 September I came back from my journey over a part of the Silk Road to and through Central Asia. 4 months of traveling through 14 countries (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran) before I flew home from Teheran. An impressive journey in countries that are extremely beautiful, with lovely and welcoming people and diverse cultures and history.

Intense traveling with more than 20000 kilometers in our mobile home on sometimes roads that hardly could be called that way. We saw many villages and cities (some wonderful, others very ugly), countries that are transforming from the old Soviet era into something more related to older cultures and the way people live, often funded by oil readily available around the Caspian sea. We saw the amazing mountains south of the Black Sea, the wonderful Caucasus, and the high mountains in the far east close to China with peaks over 7000 meter, and not to forget the (Bulgarian) Alps!

We crossed the great steppe of Kazakhstan. a drive of at least 5000 km, the remnants of lake Aral, once one of the biggest lakes of the world, saw a rocket launch from Baikonur (this little part is Russian owned), we crossed many high mountains passes, and drove the breathtaking canyon that comes from the Pamir, beginning at ca 4500 meter, and going down for ca. 400km to an altitude of 1300 meter, driving for 100's of kilometers along the Afghan border.

And then the numerous lakes with all sorts of different colors from deep cobalt blue to turquoise, and one rare spectacle in Turkmenistan where a gas crater is burning already for more than 40 years. And finally and certainly not the least to mention an enormous amount of wonderful, hospitable and welcoming people. The woman often dressed in wonderful dresses, and bringing a lot of color in the streets of almost of all countries we visited.

Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque at the Citadel Castle in old Islamic Cairo. The mosque was built 700 years ago and has been repaired many times. When you walk in you're asked to take your shoes off and women are given scarves if they don't have one already to cover their heads. This photo was taken in the central courtyard, these arches surround the entire area.

Islamic archeticture, followed patterns of islamic art in general. In islam, images of

humans or animals were discouraged, because of the danger of the image being revered or worshipped in any way. Mosques were particularly free from pictorial imagery in their decoration, and were usually adorned with floral patterns, geometric shapes, or calligraphy.

@Islam heißt: Unterwerfung

The word of islam comes from aslama which in literal translation means to leave your important property to the hands of somebody else. Therefore islam, the noun of aslama will be an attitude to leave everything to the will of God and those who did this are called muslim in Arabic. This is what my arab friend told me.

The Qalawun complex is a massive complex in Cairo, Egypt, built by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun in 1284–1285. It is located at Bayn al-Qasrayn on al-Mu'izz street and includes a hospital, a madrasa and his mausoleum. It is widely regarded as one of the major monuments of Islamic Cairo and of Mamluk architecture, notable for the size and scope of its charitable operations as well as for the richness of its architecture. It was a sight to behold! No one was there except for us and a few other random locals. We went back a second time at the end of our stay.

Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque is a mosque located in the city of Sayyidah Zaynab, in the southern suburbs of Damascus, Syria. According to Twelver Shia Muslim tradition, the mosque contains the grave of Zaynab, the daughter of ‘Alī and Fātimah and granddaughter of Muhammad. Sunni Muslim and Ismaili Shia tradition place Zaynab's tomb in the mosque of the same name in Cairo, Egypt. The tomb became a center of Twelver religious studies in Syria and a destination of mass pilgrimage by Twelver Shia Muslims from across the Muslim world (Wikipedia).

Then he found some other friend of his and tried the same... but we manage to lose him when we just followed our instinc and walked a little more to find the door we where looking for... even if he said that there is no access for non muslims... nice experience.
