This lovely flower is an aquatic plant of the genus Nelumbo, popularly known as lotus, lotus flower, Indian lotus and Indian lotus. Despite this, this plant does not belong to the Nymphaeaceae (Nymphaeales) family, where most lotuses are classified, being part of the Nelumbonaceae (Proteales) family.

It is a plant native to Asia, inhabiting slow water courses or freshwater ponds, living in shallow depths. It is rooted in the muddy bottom by a vigorous rhizome, from which leave large rounded leaves, supported above the water mirror by long petioles. It produces beautiful pink or white flowers, large and with many petals. It is known for the longevity of its seeds, which can germinate after 13 centuries. It served as inspiration for the architecture of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. This lotus is grown as an ornamental plant in water gardens around the world.

Nelumbo nucifera, also known as Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, Egyptian bean or simply lotus, is one of two extant species of aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae. It is often colloquially called a water lily. Under favorable circumstances the seeds of this aquatic perennial may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China. It has a very wide native distribution, ranging from central and northern India (at altitudes up to 1,400 m in the southern Himalayas), through northern Indochina and East Asia, with isolated locations at the Caspian Sea. It has a very long history (c. 3,000 years) of being cultivated for its edible seeds, and it is commonly cultivated in water gardens. It is the national flower of India and Vietnam. The roots of lotus are planted in the soil of the pond or river bottom, while the leaves float on the water's surface or are held well above it. The flowers are usually found on thick stems rising several centimeters above the leaves. The leaf stalks (petioles) can be up to 200 cm long, allowing the plant to grow in water to that depth, and a horizontal spread of 1 m. The leaves may be as large as 80 cm in diameter, while the showy flowers can be up to 30 cm in diameter. 7711

Nelumbo nucifera, also known as Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, or simply lotus, is one of two species of aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae. The Linnaean binomial Nelumbo nucifera (Gaertn.) is the currently recognized name for this species, which has been classified under the former names, Nelumbium speciosum (Willd.) and Nymphaea nelumbo, among others. (These names are obsolete synonyms and should be avoided in current works.) This plant is an aquatic perennial. Under favorable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China.

Native to Tropical Asia and Queensland, Australia, it is commonly cultivated in water gardens. It is also the national flower of India and Vietnam.

Nelumbo is a genus of aquatic plants with large, showy flowers. Members are commonly called lotus, though "lotus" is a name also applied to various other plants and plant groups, including the unrelated genus Lotus. Members outwardly resemble those in the family Nymphaeaceae ("water lilies"), but Nelumbo is actually very distant to Nymphaeaceae. "Nelumbo" is derived from the Sinhalese word Sinhalese: නෙළුම් neḷum, the name for the lotus Nelumbo nucifera.[1]

There are only two known living species of lotus; Nelumbo nucifera is native to Asia and is better-known. It is commonly cultivated; it is eaten and used in traditional Chinese medicine. This species is the floral emblem of both India and Vietnam.

The other lotus is Nelumbo lutea and is native to North America and the Caribbean. Horticultural hybrids have been produced between these two allopatric species.

There are several fossil species known from Cretaceous, Paleogene and Neogene aged strata throughout Eurasia and North America.

A pretty American Lotus (Nelumbo lutea) flower, nonnative and very invasive at Wildwood Lake in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Quite hard to control.

Thank you for visiting!
