This tiny butterfly (about 1 inch, or 2.5 cm. wingspread) is a Hobomok Skipper butterfly, that is, a male Poanes hobomok. This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, meaning the female doesn't look like the male. In fact, she is called the "Pocahontas Skipper".

In the picture, he's nectaring on Red Clover, a non-natiive wildflower that was originally introduced from Europe as a pasture crop, but has escaped and become very widespread today.

Seen at Stony Creek Metropark, Michigan USA in late Spring.

Location: Riveredge Nature Center, Saukville, Wisconsin

Similar to Hobomok, Poanes hobomok. Difficult to tell apart, yet different genera.

A recently emerged Hobomok Skipper waits out a cloudy interval. This species is readily identified by the diagnostic dusting of purplish-white scales along its underside wing margins. Hobomok was a Native American (Algonquin) name.

The Hobomok Skipper is primarily an eastern species that reaches the western limit of its range in central Alberta.

Monarchs and Swallowtails are few and far between in these parts. But the little butterflies, like this tiny Hobomak Skipper, are filling in. Or maybe they've always been around but they're just harder to see than their larger, more flamboyant cousins. :)

Just a little butterfly for today.

I hope everyone enjoys this image! :D

I noticed this female Hobomok skipper (Poanes hobomok) on an Ox-eye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) flower. It is late for Hobomok Skippers in Maryland -- but Finzel Swamp is colder that most of Maryland. Finzel Swamp, Garrett County, Maryland.

Pocahontas Form-Poanes hobomok

It's not bad enough that skippers are really tough to identify, there can also be alternate forms such as this female which doesn't look at all like a regular female Hobomok.

Hobomok Skipper (Poanes hobomok) photographed at the Norton Brook Reservoir in Bristol, Vermont.

I have had family here from Sydney, BC. and Calgary for our Canada Day long weekend. There was no time for shooting or Flickr. I got these Butterflies around here last week. I am behind on comments, but I will catch up over the next couple of days.

The top shot is a female Canadian Tiger Swallowtail. It is not as yellow as the male Canadian Tiger Swallowtail.

I re- posted a shot of a male Canadian Tiger Swallowtail for comparison.

The other Butterfly is a Hobomok Skipper (Poanes hobomok). I have never even heard of one and I thank Bob Parsons for the identification.
