Manaus' historic city market was inaugurated in 1882. The buildings have handicraft shops, with items of different qualities, a working fish market and a variety of places to eat. It also has a massage place if you need to relax.

The entire building that houses this market was shipped over from Europe around 1880. Colorful displays of local fruits, vegetables and herbs, and this is the best place in Manaus to get handmade leather gifts and souvenirs.

my favorite one from those of Mercado Municipal.

Europe, Portugal, Algarve, Sotavento, Tavira, Avenida Don Manuel I, Mercado municipal, People

People relaxing in the Mercado municipal in Tavira under a banner of the Gentes do Mercado project: here. “Gentes do Mercado is an integrated project in the European Year of Cultural Heritage - which aims to contribute to highlight the importance of local communities in valuing cultural heritage, as it tries to reflect and understand the heritage as a factor of rapprochement, dialogue, social cohesion and an increasingly inclusive citizenship.”

The spatial context is the new modernist/structuralist Mercado municipal of Tavira is on the Avenida Don Manuel I, some 150m from the river. It was inaugurated in 1999. A remarkable feature of the edifice is its roof supporing space frame. At the market there’s ofcourse a great abundance of fresh food, including sea food. In the plinth of the building on the avenida and river sides are shops and cafés.

And the butcher shops all offer one of the prime delicacies of Southern Portugal: secretos de porco preto (try it when you visit Portugal!).

The market is historically the third market place of Tavira. The first place was formed by the big arcades of the town hall, the second is the Ribeira Market (inaugurated in 1887) and remained active until 1999. Thereafter It was redeveloped and renovated and is now a place of leisure, esplanades and commerce. A pic of the traditinal pavement of that market is: here.

This is number 64 of the Tavira album Tavira album.

Europe, Spain, Andalucia, Malaga, Huelin, Mercado municipal de Huelin, Marisco, Fishmonger, Customers (slightly cut from all sides).

Somewhat surprisingly the cam focussed on the people and shrimps in the left-hand corner ... but I appreciated the visual effect.
