The Latin inscription (AE 1930.19=EDH HD025593) reads:

Matronis / Aufaniabus / Q(uintus) Vettius Severus / quaestor C(oloniae) C(laudiae) A(rae) A(grippinensium) / votum solvit l(ibens) m(erito) / Macrino et Celso co(n)s(ulibus)

 

"To the Aufanian Matrons, Quintus Vettius Severus, quaestor of the Colonia Claudia Arae Agrippinensium [modern Köln] freely fulfilled his vow, deservedly, during the consulship of Macrinus and Celsus."

 

The figures behind the three goddesses may represent the donor and his family.

M(arcus) Aemilius Durises eq(ues) al(ae) / Sulp(iciae) tur(ma) Nepotis an(norum) XXXVI / stip(endiorum) XVI heredes ex t(estamento) fa(ciendum) c(uraverunt)

 

"Marcus Aemilius Durises, cavalryman of the Ala Sulpicia in the turma (squadron) of Nepos, 36 years old, 16 years of service. His heirs oversaw the making [of this stele] according to his will."

 

The upper register includes a so-called 'Totenmahl' ('funerary banquet'/'feast of the dead') relief, representing the deceased reclining at a banquet in the afterlife, while the lower register represents the soldier's kitted-out horse followed by a groom.
