The two angel statues in the Lujiazui Central Green Area. In the background the SWFC and Jin Mao Tower - before somebody asks, the Shanghai Tower is completely hidden behind Jin Mao from this point of view.

Blue tone by setting the WB to "Tungsten" and flashing the angel statues. WIth AWB and no flash you'd get green angels and a brown sky - yuck!

Shanghai's main tourist trap revisited. The Yu Yuan area is Shanghai's "China cliche" area. Beautifully illuminated real (and many fake) historic buildings. Crowded at all times....

"Tourist Trap": This area around the historic Yu Garden (豫园 Yu Yuan) and the City God Temple (城隍庙 Chenghuangmiao) is made up as a souvenir shopping district especially for tourists.

Apart from the 450 years old Yu Garden itself and the City God Temple the 3 main attractions are the Hu Xin Ting Teahouse (湖心亭), the Nine Bends Bridge (九曲桥 Jiuqu Qiao) and the Lü Bo Lang Restaurant (绿波廊, remark: you can get really excellent fried snake there...😋) - the latter also serves as venue for state dinners, e.g. during the 2001 APEC summit Bill Clinton was invited there.

The Hu Xin Ting Teahouse (left center, with the staircase towards the lake) is located in the center of a small lake and can only be reached via the Nine Bends Bridge - the name of the Teahouse means (literally translated): "Lake Heart Pavillion".

Wujiaochang (五角场, lit. "5-corner-square") is a square located in Shanghai's Yangpu District. The square begun its existence as a farmer's market.

Urban development of that area started already in 1929 when the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China begun to develop a "modern Shanghai" in the north of the existing city under the "Greater Shanghai Plan" (大上海计划) - these efforts were roughly interrupted by the start of the Japanese aggression against Shanghai in 1932. Modern redevelopment only continued in the 199ties.

Today it is a modern square with shopping malls around it - and the most prominent feature is the futuristic elliptic casing around the Middle Ring Road viaduct.

One from deep in the archives. This was taken in the "Insect Museum" (昆虫博物馆) that is formally called "Shanghai Natural Wild Insect Kingdom" (上海大自然野生昆虫馆).

Despite the name this place also features lots of amphibians and lizards. Located at 1 Fenghe Road, pretty close to the Oriental Pearl Tower.

Hidden trasure, door with greens, Lao Ximen area, Kongjia Nong.

Kongjia Nong (Kongjia Alley, 孔家弄) is one of the narrow alleys that make up the core of the real old Shanghai. The area that was already a huge city (population around 750,000) before the British ever arrived - please don't believe British influenced history books that state something as "Shanghai was just a fisher village" before colonisation.

This area around Laoximen has it's own charm, though I recommend to visit it only if you are good at orientation without any maps, because many of these tiny alleys are not even on the Chinese maps - and it's a maze.

Unfortunately much of this will fall victim to urban redevelopment in the near future.

The Shanghai Center (上海中心大厦) aka Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in Shanghai (632.0 m). Designed by the American architectural firm Gensler.

The asymmetric, spiral and rounded shape serves a purpose: To prevent building damge from typhoons. Models of the building have even been tested in windtunnels.

The twin towers of the IFC complex in Shanghai Pudong. Left is 2IFC, the right tower is the "new" HSBC Tower (the former HSBC Tower is now occupied by the Hang Seng Bank). The lower parts are occupied by the IFC Mall - and the underground Apple store. The "IFC" name and the style of the letters are same as Hong Kong's IFC - because it's the same Hong Kong based investor.

In the center the Shanghai Center peeks through, on the left the Bank of China tower leans in.
