Now almost totally hidden by the highrises that surround it, Minna Street in downtown San Francisco has a most unusual history. The street was named for Minnie ("Minna") Rae Simpson (1860-???), a preteen prostitute who lived and worked in this area in the second half of the 19th Century.

 

Left as an orphan at the age of nine, Minnie turned to prostitution in order to make a living. A year later she traveled to England where she met J. M. Barrie (who later wrote 'Peter Pan'). She became pregnant and claimed to be Barrie's wife. The character of 'Wendy' in Peter Pan may have been based on Minnie Rae. Returning to San Francisco she became friends with Emperor Norton I (Joshua A. Norton, 1818-1880). Both lived on the streets of San Francisco in the 1870's with Norton referring to her as "The Little Countess". The fate of Minnie Rae is unknown. She disappeared in 1873.

 

Minna Street is more of an alley today. In many places, shaded by the highrises that surround it, the sun never settles on the street below. In this recent photograph, the building seen in the background is the new Salesforce Tower. Immediately in front of the Tower is the '100 First Street Building' and, in front of that (marked "Trulia") is the '535 Mission Street Building'. On the right of the photograph is the 'Salesforce Transit Center' or, 'Transbay Terminal', a new 21st century transportation hub that will oneday serve the entire Bay Area and beyond.

Two things he doesn't cover though.

 

Because as a long-term trend, economic activity is becoming location-elective (i.e employers have increasing freedom to choose where to locate their firms because the nature of the work is not directly tied to some immovable resource), economic activity is becoming ever more concentrated in the desirable parts of each country, generally well-established cities on the coast with good transport connections, a well developed financial-services sector, and advanced culture; NY and SF in the US, and Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, London in the UK, and so on. Thus worldwide there is a trend towards mega-cities developing at the expense of most regional towns and cities (apart from those that have a special attraction such as a mining boom or an attractive seaside location). It is the failure to appreciate the inevitability of megacity development by national and city authorities, and to plan accordingly, that underpins much of the current problems of these metropolises.

 

Some readers of Kolko's article claim he overlooked the role of non-resident overseas investors in inflating the property values of cities such as San Francisco and Seattle (and Sydney in Australia). But that is a myopic view. Real-estate investors home in on cities that are economically booming and where housing supply is chronically tight, precisely because they know that those are the places where prices are most likely to rise further by the greatest amount. In other words, although speculative investors' selective interest in these cities undoubtedly exacerbates un-affordability, their presence is a reaction to, not the primary cause of, an underlying problem.

U.S. housing market backtracks with 23% year-over-year rise in price reductions. Contributing factors to the U.S. housing market's price reduction levels include the tax credit expiration, mortgage rates, housing inventory and unemployment.

Of the 50 largest American cities, 72% are locations where it is more affordable to rent than to buy a two-bedroom apartment, condo and townhouse. In 20% of those cities, it is more affordable to rent, but buying may be more financial sound depending on the situation. Meanwhile, 8% of those cities are locations where it is more affordable to rent than to buy.

 

Before renting or buying, remember to take a close look at the unexpected costs for doing either.

This building may date to the 18th (!) century. Stivers' History of Adams County, Ohio, published in 1900, notes:

 

Andrew Ellison took up his residence on Lick Fork near the old stone house which he built in 1798, where the town of Waterford was laid out.

 

If indeed Ellison's home, the structure is among Ohio's oldest, and was erected concurrently with the nearby Treber Inn. Only a handful of 18th century buildings survive in the state; most are well-documented, but this example seems to have escaped mention.

 

The house's proportions, exterior chimneys, humble woodwork, and wide floorboards betray its early date of construction. Perhaps, Ellison was a Kentuckian; a multitude of similar stone homes exist in Kentucky.
