This is my daughter Julia's PC. It's a IBM 300GL (Intel Celeron Mendocino, 330 MHz) with 256MB RAM.

First we colored it with spray paint (Ciclamino diamantato), then reassembled it and installed Ubuntu 5.04 (Gnome 2.10). It runs surprisingly smoothly!

Julia loves to play Tuxpaint and GCompris, as well as some Flash games for kids we found on the internet.

Drawing on the whiteboard with an infrared pen produced some interesting drawings with the overhead projector using a wiimote. My students and I then had some fun drawing with the open source software TuxPaint on our whiteboard.

The idea of linking a WiiMote with a digital projector this way is credit to the inspiring work by Johnny Lee at Carnegie Mellon University. Thank you goes to Graham Cahill who encouraged me to give this a workout in my classroom, even building the pen for me to try it out with.

In all, it was a nice activity to explain the different technologies used to communicate and network between all the different devices in this setup; BlueTooth, Wireless and Infrared.

I downloaded Tux Paint for Shoshanna on Wednesday. It was a GREAT idea - she LOVES it, and caught on to the whole mouse and drawing thing super-quickly. You can see her first three masterpieces on her stream.

More fun experimenting with Tux Paint. I just love freeware!!

This was actually an attempt at a MacSmiley signature, but the mouse does have a limit where dexterity is concerned.

Tux Paint is a port from Linux over to Mac OS X (available, if you insist, for Windows as well). Feeling a little bit of obligation, today I put a stamp of Tux the Penguin (Linux mascot) sitting on top of the (I think it was) "i" ... but not for long. I clicked the bulbous undo button to make him go poof.

Guess I'm just too much of a Mac person to the core! :-D

Nels knows how to find his mom's unguarded computer, flip to Adium, find my name, and put in a request. Fortunately, he's a very slow typist, so not much damage can happen while Kelly's away. Any ideas on how to get sparkles on it?

Some day when I grow up, I'll get Photoshop and a Wacom tablet.

For the time being, I'm getting my feet wet with Tux Paint, a freeware application which I originally installed to amuse my grandbaby. Evidently, I too am easily amused. (I adore the sound effects!)

Using only the mouse, so far this has been the best I could do. My Kindergarten teacher used to tell me that my artwork was brilliant. Somehow, I don't think my drawing and painting skills developed much further after the age of five.

On a Raspberry Pi 2 with the Wireless Keyboard and Mouse from ModMyPi. It is an amazingly capable little computer.

Initially I was pretty cynical about Minecraft but the Pi edition with its Python API is an impressive way to introduce children to coding.

The Pi really does feel like a return to an educational computer like the Acorn systems it was inspired by and my generation were exposed to from an early age.

I would recommend switching the SD card into read only mode once Raspbian and the applications you want are installed as it easy to corrupt the OS by cutting the power.

It would be nice to see the educational Tux apps installed by default.

Tux Paint is a free, cross-platform drawing and painting application. These are configuration options which can be sent for younger users.

My kid is discovering the wonders of open source software as he demonstrates great skill with Tux Paint.

Funny, my first PC was about the same size as his (although it had to use the TV as its display), can you recall the Sinclair ZX Spectrum?

This is a picture of Rachel's stuffed animal cat, "Mittens," which she drew on TuxPaint.

I helped Phil Shapiro with his booth at Maker Faire NoVa, which was held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia on March 18, 2018. Basically Phil was demonstrating #Inkscape , which is a #free #opensource alternative to #Adobe #Illustrator. He also had another computer with #TuxPaint , which is a #graphics program for children under 7.

Jenna is obsessed with Tuxpaint. We wouldn't let her play, so she decided to draw the screen herself...

Tux Paint is a free and open source bitmap graphics editor (a program for creating and processing raster graphics) geared towards young children. The project was started in 2002 by Bill Kendrick who continues to maintain and improve it, with help from numerous volunteers. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License, and seen by many as a free software alternative to a similar proprietary educational software product, Kid Pix.

I figured out how to get the pictures that she's taken into TuxPaint so she can draw all over them.

Made in the children's drawing program www.tuxpaint.org It is not possible to "export" so I made a screenshot and kept the interface in it. It makes a lot of funny sounds when you draw.
