We visited the Zune HQ today. In the entryway was an iPod recycling bin.

It's my brand new 8 gig Zune I bought for myself this Christmas!

I also ordered Quentin's new book and some more paper (including a couple sheets of Origamido, which I've never had the pleasure to fold before). Unfortunately I ordered them 5 weeks ago and the package still hasn't made it here, augh! I'm getting desperate!

Everybody’s got one….

I get in to the train and it’s so damn crowded. Some are going to work, kids heading to school, some returning home from the night shifts and some still trying to wake up. Guess what? Everyone’s got a music player and you can see cables coming out from their ears. Looks so freaking electronic to me. Feels like there are hundreds of underground DISCOs next to me as almost everyone is blasting the volume off. Few of them are humming and some dancing gently. Sounds fun doesn’t it? It seems that 40 years ago everyone had a book to read. A small book so that passengers can turn the pages without causing much trouble to the nearby passengers. Talking about trouble…what if somebody does NOT want to hear the music some other person is playing so loud. Do we have a choice?

I know others think its crap, but I like the Zune.

Lighting info:

Shot in a small hallway. One AB400 with grid lighting the background (blue mat board hanging on a door). One Quantaray 900WA flash to camera lower right (about 5 o'clock), pointed up at the right wall. The light from that flash bounced to left wall as well providing fill on that side.

Rest in peace, Zune, the most under-rated and poorly supported musical device of all time. You will be missed by many a rabid (and a few normal) people.

Pic isn't mine, btw.

I never did get along with my 80GB iPod Classic - the clickwheel was very insensitive, and often refused to respond at all. The iPod also seems to have a memroy leak problem, where it slows down more and more, eventually requiring a reset.

Then, a few weeks back, I remembered the Zune. From reading reviews of it, the general consensus seems to be that it's better than the iPod Classic, so I figgered I might as well give it a go. Before ordering one I downloaded the Zune software to see how I'd get on.

The Zune software is... ok. I find it better than iTunes for playing music, but when using the big list view, scrolling is reeeaallly slow. No idea why. The podcasts thing also took a bit of fiddling around with to set up (not helped by the decidedly flaky internet connection I've had lately). Took about 5 hours to sync my 55GB of music!

It's all set up now and I have to say, the Zune device is much nicer to use than the iPod Classic. Scrolling through lists is much quicker, easier and more accurate, the big screen put to good use when displaying album art, and little touches like being able to go to the current artist's list of albums when in Shuffle All mode are nice.

The only thing I've found wanting from the iPod is a Composers list, although I could perhaps get around this using a playlist. Seems a bit of a faff though.

The Zune Marketplace (similar to the iTunes Music Store) isn't available in the UK yet, so I can't comment on that aspect of the package.

Oh and the earphones that come with the Zune are really quite nice - noise-blocking and pretty good sound. I use them for listening to podcasts, but prefer my Koss PortaPros for music.

This thing flashes crazy seizure-inducing style.

This set of 6 animations is a small branding package we have created for Zune Creative. The animated set will essentially work as interstitials, which the brand will use at events and other situations where other videos need to be accompanied by the Zune brand.

The brief for this project was quite open, which led us to explore different animation techniques and a more subjective concept. The Zune Creative team granted us a lot of freedom from the start, including creating the music and sound effects. Our approach was to connect various abstract associations to music: from relating it with the pleasure of eating candy (Zune Sweets), to the idea of users communicating and sharing music (Zune Hair), to the idea of tranferring music from one place into another, sharing (Zune Boxes) all the way to the idea of change, adaptation and collage of tastes, personalities, preferences / customization (Zune Liquid & Cages).

...Lindsay Lohan will give a microphone head for it.

I guess MS will go to any lengths to de-throne the iPod...

Microsoft had a gorgeous booth at CES, as usual.
