Falling on a Sunday this year, Canada Day long weekend is often a day off work and a time for outdoor activities in the early Canadian summer.
It is a federal holiday and it is also Canada's main patriotic holiday, celebrated on on this day every year by all provincial governments and most businesses across the country.
(French: Fête du Canada) is Canada's national holiday, marking the establishment of Canada as a Dominion on July 1, 1867.
Canada Day is often referred to as "Canada's birthday" this year being the 140th, particularly in the popular press. However the first day of July does not commemorate a clear-cut date of "independence" or "founding" of Canada, but instead merely commemorates the begining of the establishment of the Canadian confederation through the 1867 British North America Act.
The July 1 holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day.
On October 27, 1982, July 1st which was known as "Dominion Day" became "Canada Day"
