Holland House - a Peabody Estate for the 21st century
Holland House, 42 Newington Green, N16 9QH.
Designed by Rivington Street Studios for Peabody and completed in 1999.
I've stepped out of Islington and into Hackney. Now Google has thrown up something from my former workplace: Newington Green (North) Conservation Area Appraisal by Hackney Conservation and Design Team.
I quote from the above document: 'The site formerly occupied by no. 42 Newington Green now forms part of a housing development by the Peabody Trust. Holland House is a seven storey tower to the corner, with a lower terrace running along Albion Road to the north. To the west the development incorporates a medical centre. Rivington Street Studio won a competition to design the building in 1996. The development was given the Best Public Housing Development Award in the 2001 Brick Awards. The tower element is clearly out of scale with the historic fabric of the Green, which generally has a consistent domestic scale of 3-4 storeys.'
The Action Group also think that this building is out of scale. I disagree. It may not be the same height. as the other buildings, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's out of scale. I think it is a welcome addition to the square very well and turns the corner neatly. (I don't think that this picture does the new building any favours. It may tne at the edge of acceptability in height, but I it feels OK when to me when I'm in the vicinity.)
