Community of Democracies 12th Governing Council
Dr. Tomicah Tillemann, Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies (S/SACSED) at the Community of Democracies Governing Council in Geneva, March 12, 2014. The Governing Council is the CD's highest decision-making body. The meeting addressed a broad range of issues related to democracy including the status of freedom of association in the world, challenges facing human rights defenders, and current developments in Ukraine. During the session, delegates received a briefings from two U.N. Special Rapporteurs, Mr. Maina Kiai, UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, and Ms. Margaret Sekaggya, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.
