The Right to Education for Girls

On Thursday, 17 March 2016 the Africa Group and United States of America co-hosted a UN Human Rights Council Session side event titled “The Right to Education for Girls.” An expert panel featuring Ms Marilena Viviani: Director of the UNICEF Geneva Liaison Office, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda: the African Union Goodwill Ambassador for the Campaign to End Child Marriage and Dr. Yolande Miller-Grandvaux: World YWCA General Secretary and USAID Education Advisor highlighted the need for better access to education for girls and the contribution this provides to the promotion and protection of other internationally recognized human rights. The event was opened by Ambassador Keith Harper, U.S. Representative to the Human Rights Council and Ambassador Jean-Marie Ehouzou, African Union Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva. The panel was moderated by Ambassador Yvette Stevens, Permanent Representative of the of Sierra Leone.
