US Expresses Concern about Nuclear Ban Treaty

Ambassador Robert Wood held a media round table September 15 to express U.S. concern about how the nuclear weapons ban treaty would undermine the nuclear non-proliferation regime. "The ban treaty is a bad idea, it will not make the world a safer place. It will not reduce nuclear weapons stockpiles by one single weapon, it will have no practical impact on nuclear disarmament," he said. "We are now facing the greatest nuclear challenge that we have faced for quite some time, meaning North Korea's nuclear weapons program and its ballistic weapons activities, and the ban treaty does nothing, and cannot do anything, to impact and improve the situation with regard to that challenge that we face."
