Among the Stars

The U.S. Mission was pleased to hold a special screening of the Disney+ documentary “Among the Stars” followed by a discussion with NASA officials, astronauts and scientists who appear in the film, including American Nobel Laureate Professor Samuel C. C. Ting.

The film focuses on the behind the behind-the-scenes story of the dramatic effort to repair the unique Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). The AMS, which aims to reveal the origins of the universe, was assembled in Geneva at CERN, and delivered to the ISS by Space Shuttle Endeavor in 2011. Particle physicist Professor Ting is the principal investigator for the AMS experiment.

“Professor Ting’s passion for science and global cooperation is truly inspiring,” said U.S. Ambassador Sheba Crocker, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, who hosted the event which brought together an audience of diplomats, students, teachers and other guests from Geneva’s international community.

Following the screening, the audience had an opportunity to put questions to Professor Ting and NASA officials, including Director of the International Space Station, Robyn Gatens, Deputy Director of the International Space Station, Dana Weigel, Ken Bollweg, AMS Project Manager, and Brian Mader, spacewalks task lead. U.S. Astronauts Mike Fincke, who was part of the Endeavor team that originally delivered the AMS to the ISS, and Chris Cassidy, a former ISS commander who played a central role in the Mission to repair the AMS also joined via Zoom.
