Art and Activism – Joan Baez in Geneva

Civil Rights activist and musician Joan Baez joined Ambassador Michèle Taylor for an event focused on art and activism June 27 on the eve of the Geneva opening of the Art in Embassies traveling exhibition "A More Perfect Union: American Artists and the Currents of Our Time."

“Joan Baez’s life has placed her at the epicenter of some particularly historic events. She was the closing act on the first day of Woodstock, she led folks at the first March on Washington, and was an important part of so many iconic moments of the civil rights movement. She has had a profound influence on the lives of so many of us who work for justice and equality in the world” said Ambassador Michèle Taylor, U.S. Permanent Representative to the Human Rights Council, who led a conversation between Baez and an audience of diplomats, artists, and civil society representatives. “Joan’s music and visual arts are deeply intertwined with her advocacy for Human Rights.

Joan Baez’s portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt is part of the traveling art exhibition “A More Perfect Union” organized by Art in Embassies highlighting how central the work of artists is to the defense of democracy.
