Ambassador Holgate's Visit to the IAEA's Nuclear Applications Laboratories

IAEA Deputy Director General Aldo Malavasi shows Ambassador Holgate mosquito larvae at the Insect Pest Control Laboratory at the IAEA’s Nuclear Applications Laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria. Using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), wild female insects of the pest population do not reproduce when they are inseminated by released, radiation-sterilised males. This technique can be used on mosquitos that carry the Zika virus and also on other insects such as tsetse flies, moths and fruit flies.
