Ambassador Holgate's Visit to the IAEA's Nuclear Applications Laboratories
Ambassador Holgate visited the Insect Pest Control Laboratory at the IAEA’s Nuclear Applications Laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria, where Laboratory Head Marc Vreyson explained the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). With SIT, wild female insects of the pest population do not reproduce when they are inseminated by released, radiation-sterilised males. This technique can be used on mosquitos that carry the Zika virus and also on other insects such as tsetse flies, moths and fruit flies.
