I really like painting these enormous heads. you cant ignore them when you walk into a room where they are. This one is loosely based on a vintage photograph from the early 1930's. I had to make some artistic decisions to get this expression out of her. My studio is in a very small town in Northern New England. There is a percentage of people that come into the studio who have never seen a contemporary painting before, much less anything that isnt a moose, a lighthouse or a loon. Their perceptions of an artist is Vincent Vangogh, Bob Ross, or at best, Thomas Kinkaide. I watch them with great admiration when they come into the studio, their eyes wide, their faces, unsure. Some come back. This is new for them. I'm excited to be working in the way that i am, where i am. I do feel accepted by the general population, warmly, but the others are waiting to see what all this falderall is about. I consider it an honor when those specific people come back to see what's new.
